Best Flowers for Nairobi Weather (and How to Make Them Last)
Nairobi sits at nearly 1,800 metres, and that altitude does two things to cut flowers at once. The cool nights are kind to them. it is the same climate that makes Kenyan roses good enough to fly to Amsterdam. The daytime UV is not. A bouquet left on a sunny windowsill here will go over in half the time it would in a temperate city, and most of the advice written about keeping flowers alive was not written for this.
The best flowers for Nairobi weather
Roses are the obvious answer, and not out of habit. the highland farms around Naivasha and Limuru grow them at an altitude that produces tight heads and strong stems. Chrysanthemums are the workhorse: they will outlast almost anything else in the vase. Protea holds two weeks and then dries well, which is why it anchors most of our arrangements for men. Carnations and statice are unglamorous and nearly indestructible.
What struggles
Hydrangeas drink enormously and wilt within hours of leaving water. Peonies have a narrow season and rarely travel well. Imported tulips arrive already tired. None of these are impossible, but they are not what to send if you want the bouquet to still look like something on Friday.
Five rules that actually matter
- Recut the stems at an angle, daily. A flat cut sits on the bottom of the vase and stops drinking. Two minutes a day is the single highest-return thing you can do.
- Change the water, daily. Bacteria block the stems. Cloudy water is already too late.
- Keep them out of direct sun. Especially between 11am and 3pm. A bright room is fine; a sunny sill is not.
- Keep them away from the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, which tells flowers to finish. Bananas are the worst offenders.
- Strip any leaves below the waterline. Submerged foliage rots, and rot is what turns the water cloudy in the first place.
What we do differently
Stems are cut to order and conditioned overnight. a long drink in clean water in a cool room before they are touched. then hand tied the morning they go out. It is not a dramatic process, but it is the difference between a bouquet that peaks on day two and one that peaks on day five.
If you want the low-maintenance option, send an arrangement in foam or a vase instead of a hand-tie: our vase arrangements need nothing from the recipient for the first few days. And if a bouquet from us fails inside five days, tell us and we replace it. see our delivery and guarantee terms.
